Work Schedule for the San Agustin Mission Excavation

Mapping

Experts in archaeological mapping will make a very precise and detailed map of the entire area. This map can be related to historical photos and to records from earlier excavations to further expand our knowlege of this area's history.

Excavation

The Mission Complex area is believed to be buried by up to five feet of modern soils. This "overburden" will be carefully removed using heavy equipment. Once this mechanical excavation is complete, archaeologists will begin the task of carefully excavating and screening the deposits encountered.

All features such as adobe walls, hearths, out-buildings and compound walls will be carefully documented with measured drawings and photographs.
