| 2006 Pecos Conference - One Hundred Years of Archaeology and Preservation in the Southwest

The 2006 Pecos Conference will be held at Navajo Lake, near Bloomfield, New Mexico, on August 10-13. This will be the 69th meeting to present academic papers and recent research concerning archaeology in the American Southwest for professional archaeologists, avocationists, and the interested general public. The tradition of the conference was initiated at Pecos, New Mexico, in 1927 by A. V. Kidder for the purpose of sharing information and has, with the exception of a ten-year hiatus, been held annually at various Southwest locations. Part of the flavor of Pecos is the experience: the excitement of hearing new research, camping at a remote site with your friends and families, reunions with 500 or so of your colleagues, a catered dinner and dance featuring live music on the closing Saturday of the conference, and a number of archaeology site tours on Sunday. This year's conference will be a single-venue event taking place at the Elk's Campground, located forty miles east of Farmington. The campground and conference area can be found on the south side (New Mexico side) of Navajo Lake, approximately five miles from the Navajo Dam overlook. On-site camping amidst the piñon and juniper is plentiful, however conference pre-registration and reservations are strongly recommended. Overflow camping is available off-site and, for those willing to travel the extra distance, plenty of commercial rooms may be found in Bloomfield and Farmington.
